'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' is the story of divorce lawyer, Jay Shrivastava and his wife, Aarti Shrivastava. The story begins on a breezy summer morning in Mumbai at the Ritz Hotel. A nervous Jay meets his wife for breakfast to deliver bad news: he has been having an affair with fellow divorce lawyer Maya Bose for the last six months and wants a divorce. When Aarti's mother, Dolly (Farida Jalal) hears of this news, she explains to her daughter that Jay was always like this; unable to leave Aarti even when they were kids. The two women share a long breakfast and reminisce about their childhood.As Aarti and Dolly walk away from the hotel, they meet Jay and Maya standing on the pavement. After exchanging pleasantries, they all continue on to Aarti's house. While Aarti sits in the garden discussing divorce law with her mother, Jay arrives at the mansion. At first he is uncomfortable but changes his mind when he sees how much Dolly loves him; she tells him that she has been waiting for him to return home for sixteen years and that leaving her and Aarti is the hardest thing she has ever had to do. He hugs her and leaves soon afterwards, without telling Maya why he left Dolly in tears. Jay's best friend, Pramod is at Jay's house with his wife, Seema. They are having an argument because Pramod has been ignoring Seema for the last year. While they are talking in the kitchen, Seema stands up to leave disgusted with her husband. She walks outside and has a heart attack right in front of Jay's house. While waiting for an ambulance to arrive, Aarti asks Jay what is wrong with their society that people don't know how to love anymore. As Aarti goes upstairs to talk to her mother and get her medicine, Jay finds Maya hidden behind a curtain in the lounge drinking whiskey. Maya scolds him for not telling her about his divorce and for staying with Aarti. She promises to keep their relationship secret before leaving Jay alone in the house. At Aarti's house, Jay tells her mother that he has decided to stay with Aarti after all. Both women are delighted but they are interrupted by the sound of a train outside in the street. As they stand at the front door listening, Maya comes running towards them in tears. Dolly has died of a heart attack during the train's arrival.
